For those of you who are unsure of exactly what dual diagnosis is, dual diagnosis is when an individual is suffering from a both drug and/or alcohol addiction and an existing psychiatric problem. In the GLBT community, we find a high incidence not only of substance abuse, but of dual diagnosis as well. Studies have shown the high rate of dual diagnosis among the gay population might be due to the prejudice, alienation, discrimination and isolation the person experiences growing up gay or lesbian. In cases of dual diagnosis, the psychiatric disorder can either be a result of, or the cause of, the addiction.
